Lately, I’ve become a little obsessed with looking at stones.
Furniture made from natural stone, vessels carved out of stone—especially stone sinks. I can spend ages looking at them.
There’s something about things made by hand by craftsmen that really draws me in.
If something is too perfectly finished, it does nothing for me.
Uneven surfaces, slightly distorted shapes, traces left behind from carving—I’m much more attracted to things like that.
And this is extremely important: I don’t mean something that was deliberately made to look imperfect, like, “Look, we intentionally left it rustic!”
It has to happen naturally.
When I think about it, I’ve always liked things like this.
I once read a book by Bernard Leach. That led me to discover Onta ware, which in turn sparked my interest in Yanagi Sōetsu and the Japanese folk craft movement, mingei.
Onta ware is a perfect example. It was made as everyday pottery. It isn’t completely uniform. Even when the same thing is made in the same way, each piece comes out slightly different.
There is a simple beauty in things made for ordinary life.
I’m deeply attracted to that kind of beauty.
On the other hand, I’ve never been particularly drawn to extravagant things or things with an obvious sense of luxury.
And it isn’t about price.
I don’t choose simple things because they’re cheaper. In fact, even if the simpler thing is more expensive, I’ll probably still choose it.
I like things that don’t insist upon themselves.
Actually, I sometimes even feel slightly uncomfortable with the whole idea of brands.
Is it because I feel intimidated by them?
Because they don’t suit me?
Or is it because the value of an object somehow becomes superimposed onto the value of the person who owns it?
Maybe that’s it.
I think I dislike the feeling of being handed the answer—“This is valuable!”—before I’ve even had the chance to decide what I feel about it myself.
Maybe.
And since I started working at a hostess club, I feel like I’ve become even more attracted to simple, unpretentious things.
I actually only realized that as I was writing this.
Because before I started this job, there were times when I bought branded things myself.
Working in this world means constantly being surrounded by obvious symbols of value: brands, cars, watches, and so on.
And strangely, the more time I spend in that world, the more I find myself seeking out things on the opposite side of it.
That tendency seems to grow stronger by the day.
Earth, stone, wood.
Things made by human hands, slightly uneven.
Things that simply exist.
Things with no decoration at all.
Looking at them calms me down.
Why?
Is it simply a reaction against the world I’m surrounded by?
Or perhaps the sense of beauty that was already inside me has simply become clearer precisely because I now spend so much time in such a glamorous environment.
After spending so much time looking at stones lately, another question suddenly occurred to me.
Why am I so attracted to handmade things in the first place?
And I think there’s probably something more than simple aesthetic preference involved.
I trust my own eye quite a lot.
And if I’m being truthful, I also take some pride in believing that I can see through superficial ideas of value and recognize the essence of things.
Pretty arrogant of me.
Maybe the desire to discover value for myself, rather than having someone else decide what is valuable for me, is itself a form of pride.
If that’s true, then my attraction to simple things isn’t made up purely of aesthetic preference.
There’s probably some rebelliousness and pride mixed in there too.
I think that’s probably true.
And there’s something else I find interesting.
It isn’t only objects.
When it comes to people, too, I tend to like those who are a little awkward.
Rather than someone perfectly polished who can handle everything effortlessly, I’m drawn to people who may not be good at everything, but whose real self somehow shows through.
Maybe, to me, those things are connected.
What exactly is the kind of beauty that attracts me?
Is it craftsmanship?
Imperfection?
Humanity?
Or is it my own pride—the desire to be someone capable of recognizing value in things like that?
My rebellious instinct to say, “I’m not going to be swept along with everyone else”?
The more I think about it, the less I understand.
It’s probably all of those things.
I don’t think they can really be separated from one another.
But after spending so much time looking at stones lately, I somehow ended up becoming more interested in why I like stones than in the stones themselves. lol
There’s probably still more to think about.
But seriously.
Stones are great.
I have absolutely no idea why, but they’re ridiculously entertaining to look at!
Pumice is SO cute. lol
What are those adorable little bubbly holes?!
Absolutely amazing. 😁😁
After all this theorizing, though, maybe there simply isn’t a reason for liking something.
Is this what people mean when they say that trying to explain something irrational turns it into a lie?!
People ask things like, “Tell me why you like me,” or demand that you explain exactly why you like something.
But maybe there really isn’t a reason?!
The moment you start explaining it, don’t you suddenly think, “Wait… is that actually true?”
Oh.
Even trying to explain why pumice is cute is starting to make it sound weird. 😁
