This pouch that I use every day.
It features illustrations drawn by a friend of mine.
She is an illustrator, and I love the pictures she creates. Whenever she holds an exhibition, I go to see it and sometimes buy her work.
Her illustrations make me feel warm and at ease. They are gentle, peaceful, and refined.
And she herself is exactly the same. I always think that she truly lives up to her name.
I believe that an artist’s heart reveals itself in their art.
Even when two people look at the exact same thing, what they choose to draw can be completely different. What they find cute, what colors they choose, even the kind of touch they use when they draw.
That is why I don’t think a work of art can ever be completely separated from the spirit of the person who created it.
I have never been particularly fond of avant-garde art.
Some of it feels destructive or aggressive, and it makes me uneasy.
I understand that creating such work may bring relief or even salvation to some people, but personally, I am drawn to people who create gentle art.
And I realized that it is not simply the finished work that I love.
I love the heart from which that work was born.
At the same time, I also believe that it works the other way around.
The heart creates the work, but the work also creates the heart.
Creation is an act of dwelling in emotion. I feel this myself when I write.
Human emotions are naturally quite fluid.
Irritation and joy alike will eventually flow back into everyday life if we simply leave them alone.
But the moment we try to draw them or put them into words, we stop and remain with that emotion for a while.
We dwell, throughout the creative process, in feelings that might otherwise have simply passed us by.
Imagine someone who spends every day looking for faults in other people, thinking about them, and turning them into amusing stories.
Then imagine someone who spends every day noticing small, lovely things, drawing strawberries and cakes, wondering how best to convey their softness.
After years of doing this, I find it hard to believe that their hearts would still inhabit exactly the same place.
That is why I think expression matters far more than we sometimes realize.
Because what we create eventually becomes part of who we are.
When the TV show Ueda to Onna ga Hoeru Yoru first started airing, I thought it was interesting.
The women would talk humorously about moments when people irritated them or about the kinds of people they disliked, and at first I watched it with curiosity.
But eventually, I could no longer watch it.
Even if it was simply their job, constantly searching for faults in others and turning those faults into material made me feel as though even my own heart was becoming worn down just by watching.
Was there anything irritating today? Did I meet anyone strange today?
If you begin looking at each day through that lens, the world will gradually fill with unpleasant people, and everything will start to look darker.
Human beings are remarkably good at finding what they are looking for.
It is not that I only want to write pretty things.
I have plenty of ugly emotions myself.
I simply do not want to deliberately nurture them inside me.
What we write about. What we look at. What we talk about. What we read.
Through these small choices, the human heart is gradually shaped.
Thinking about this makes it interesting to look at my friend.
Every day, she notices lovely little things and turns them into illustrations.
And in real life, she too is refined, unassuming, and gentle.
Do her pictures resemble her, or has she gradually come to resemble her pictures?
Perhaps, over many years, they have been shaping each other.
Gentle pictures are born from her gentle heart.
The time she spends creating those pictures then returns something to her heart.
Those illustrations become a pouch and eventually make their way to me.
I look at it every day, and it brings me a little sense of peace.
And now, I am writing about it.
While writing this, I am thinking about her and about human kindness.
And as I write, I am dwelling in that gentle emotion myself.
Perhaps something from it will remain in the heart of someone who reads this too.
Creation is not only a way of giving form to emotion.
It is also a bridge through which emotion passes from one person to another.
I love that cycle.
We cannot perfectly choose everything we see or everything we think.
But we can choose, at least to some extent, where we allow our hearts to dwell.
And if I have that choice, I would rather spend as much time as possible in the company of gentle things.
Whenever I look at this pouch, that is what I think.
I don’t have many friends.
And when it comes to friends I still meet and talk to now, I could probably count them on one hand. Actually, maybe I wouldn’t even need the whole hand.
So I am very grateful to her for still being a part of my life and staying in touch with me.
Should I tell her I wrote about her on PokéPara?! Maybe she’ll laugh at me?!
But that’s okay.
This is what I wanted to write about today.
Thank you again for today 😊
