先日茨城県の笠間で塩壺を買った。笠間がなぜ焼き物で有名になったかというと、土の種類が多く、江戸に近く、需要が高かったためだそうだ。また、統一されたデザインがなく作家に自由度があるため、多くの陶芸家が集まったようだ。実際笠間焼きを目にすると多様なデザインがあり、目を引くものばかりだった。

その中でも特に目を引いたのがこの塩壺だった。

私は昔から塩にはこだわりがある。最近は減塩という言葉をよく聞くが、私は塩を減らすことよりも、どんな塩を選ぶかの方が大切なのではないかと思っている。食卓塩のような精製された塩と、海の成分を残した塩を同じものとして考えることには、違和感があるからだ。

だから私はミネラルを含んだ自然な塩を選ぶ。おすすめは神宝塩、味に深みがあり、本当に全然違う。

そして、それを遠慮して使うわけでもなく、寧ろ積極的に摂る。

日本人は古くから塩を大切にしてきた。保存のためだけではなく、神事にも、清めにも使い、暮らしの中心には塩があった。塩は敵ではなかった。

そんな私の毎日にある塩をこの塩壺に入れたい。一目惚れした。

別に塩壺はなくてもいいものだ。容器から出して振りかけるだけでもいい。けれど人間は昔からなくてもいいものを大切にしてきた。

器に絵を描き、道具に美しさを求めた。便利さだけでは説明できない、この1つの壺が私の生活を彩ってくれる。

今日からはこの塩壺から1つまみの塩を取り出して料理をする。味は変わらないのかもしれない。それでも暮らしは少しだけ豊かになる気がする。

A Salt Jar from Kasama

The other day, I bought a salt jar in Kasama, Ibaraki.

Kasama became famous for its pottery for several reasons. The area has a rich variety of clay, it is relatively close to Edo (present-day Tokyo), and there was strong demand for pottery. Unlike many traditional pottery regions, Kasama does not have a single unified style. Artists are given a great deal of freedom, which has attracted many ceramicists over the years.

When I visited, I was struck by the diversity of the pottery on display. Each piece seemed to have its own personality.

Among them, one piece especially caught my eye: this salt jar.

I have always been particular about salt.

These days, we often hear about reducing salt intake. Of course, I understand the concern. However, I sometimes feel that choosing the right salt may be just as important as reducing it.

To me, refined table salt and natural sea salt rich in minerals are not exactly the same thing.

That is why I prefer natural salts that still contain minerals from the sea.

One of my favorites is Shinpō Salt. It has a remarkable depth of flavor and tastes completely different from ordinary table salt.

And I do not use it sparingly. On the contrary, I use it generously.

For centuries, salt held an important place in Japanese life. It was used not only for preserving food, but also in religious rituals and purification ceremonies. Salt was never regarded as an enemy.

That is why this small salt jar immediately appealed to me.

Strictly speaking, a salt jar is unnecessary. I could simply pour salt directly from its package.

Yet human beings have always treasured things that are not strictly necessary.

We decorate our pottery. We seek beauty in our tools.

Practicality alone cannot explain these impulses.

This little jar may seem insignificant, but I feel it will bring a quiet richness to my daily life.

Starting today, I will take a pinch of salt from this jar whenever I cook.

Perhaps the taste of the food will remain exactly the same.

Even so, I suspect that life itself will feel just a little richer.
