Yesterday, I opened my laptop for the first time in what felt like forever.
First, I had to charge it. Then, since I don’t have Wi-Fi at home, I connected it to my phone’s hotspot.
Why did I go through all that?
Because someone had sent me a typing game.
I thought, “I wonder how fast I can type now?”
And when I tried it again after such a long time, it was surprisingly fun.
So I went on YouTube and watched some insanely fast typists.
They were absolute monsters.
You can’t even see their fingers moving. The letters appear on the screen and disappear almost at the exact same moment. lol
Watching them made me think:
I want to become a monster too!
Not that I have any particular reason to.
Even if I somehow become ridiculously good at typing now, it’s not like anything special is going to happen. I don’t even know if it’ll be useful for anything.
But for some reason, I just want to try.
And when I had that thought, I felt something strangely nostalgic.
When I was a kid, I was obsessed with jumping rope and riding a unicycle.
I absolutely loved them. I never looked at the time. I was just having fun, and I could keep going forever.
I’ve almost never been the type to get hooked on video games either, but there was one exception: Harvest Moon.
I was ridiculously obsessed with that game.
I didn’t need sleep. I didn’t need food.
Why waste time on any of that when I could be on my farm?!
Looking back, I realized that I’ve hardly ever lost myself in something like that since becoming an adult.
As an adult, whenever I think about doing something, I immediately start wondering what it will lead to.
If there’s no purpose, I can’t seem to get myself moving.
“What’s the point of doing this?”
Somewhere along the way, I even started demanding a reason for play.
As a child, I never thought like that.
I did things simply because I wanted to do them.
Another thing that changed as I grew older was the idea of showing things to other people.
I used to post my thoughts on books I’d read and videos of myself playing piano on Instagram.
At one point, I even wondered what it would feel like to have a lot of followers.
Would something feel different if I had tens of thousands?
So, just out of curiosity, I started randomly visiting accounts I wasn’t even interested in and liking their posts.
And wow, the followers really do start piling up. lol
You get likes. You get comments from complete strangers.
But none of it made me particularly happy.
Trying it only confirmed that it probably wasn’t for me.
I kept wondering why.
When I’m reading a book or playing the piano, the moment another person’s gaze enters my mind—“Maybe I’ll post this”—I can’t enjoy the thing itself in quite the same way anymore.
So I thought maybe I just didn’t like showing things to other people.
It felt like doing so somehow took away from the pure joy of it.
But then, while thinking about this whole typing thing, I realized:
Nope.
I absolutely want to show people.
If I ever become freakishly fast at typing, I am 100% going to brag about it.
Look at my hands! LOOK! I did it! I became a monster!
I would absolutely want people to see.
So apparently, I do like showing off after all.
Then I started wondering what the difference was.
And I think maybe it’s the order of things.
Even when I was a child, whenever I learned how to do something new, I wanted to show people.
With my unicycle or my jump rope, I’d be like,
“Look! Look what I can do!” “Look at this new trick I learned!”
I bragged about it with complete innocence.
But I wasn’t doing those things so that I could brag about them.
I did them because I genuinely loved doing them.
And then I’d get so excited about what I could do that the excitement would overflow into:
“Look! Look!”
I’m not trying to become someone who doesn’t care at all what other people think.
I just don’t want other people’s eyes to be the reason I start doing something.
I want it to begin with:
“I just wanna do this!”
And then I want to enjoy it on my own, get better at it, impress myself, and when I finally think, “Holy crap, I’m good,” I want to brag about it as much as I want.
I want to brag with the same innocent excitement I had as a little kid.
Right now, my life doesn’t really allow me to lose myself in something for hours at a time.
So for now, I’ve decided to practice typing for just ten minutes every day.
I don’t know if I’ll stick with it. I don’t know if I’ll actually get that fast. Maybe I’ll get bored and quit halfway through.
And that’s fine.
I want to spend a little bit of time again doing something for no particular reason other than:
“This looks fun.”
As an adult, I think being able to do that might actually be one of the greatest luxuries there is.
And if I really do reach monster level someday, I’ll post it here.
With all the innocent excitement of a little kid, I’ll say:
“LOOK! I BECAME A MONSTER!”
That’s what it is.
I want to feel that excitement bubbling up from inside me again!
By becoming an absolute typing monster!
Alright!
TIME TO BECOME A MONSTER! 😚
